Slip-resistant finishes

Grip built into the floor

Slip-resistant flooring adds measured texture to a finished surface, from a fine sand-like tooth on interior floors to aggressive grit on exterior steps and ramps. The grip is part of the coating system, so it protects like a seal, cleans like a finish, and works when the surface is wet.

Getting it right is a balancing act: enough texture to hold a shoe in the rain, not so much that the floor becomes hard to clean. After over 40 years of valley work, Chris Miller specs traction additives by where the surface lives and who walks on it.

Where does slip resistance matter most at home?

Anywhere concrete meets water or elevation. Exterior steps and stoops that ice up, walkways under Roanoke freeze and thaw, garage floors that drip snowmelt all winter, pool surrounds, laundry zones, and basement stairs. These are the surfaces where a fall actually happens, and each of them can carry a finish with grip built in. It is a natural part of our flooring work in Roanoke: the same coatings that protect the concrete, specified with the traction the location demands.

How is slip resistance actually measured and added?

Traction has real standards behind it. Safety guidance from OSHA treats walking surface traction as a measurable property, and finish systems are rated for wet and dry grip. In practice we build it in three ways: broadcast aggregates like fine grit seeded into the coating, textured trowel and broom finishes shaped into overlays, and additive-loaded topcoats where the grit is suspended in the sealer itself. The result is traction that is part of the wear layer, hiding nothing and peeling never.

Can a floor be glossy and still grip?

Yes, and this surprises most people. Texture, not shine, is what your shoe feels, so a coated floor can carry a clean satin or gloss look while a fine aggregate in the topcoat quietly does the safety work. Flake garage systems are a perfect example: the chips themselves add subtle tooth, and the topcoat can be dialed up with extra grit for ramps or wet entries. If the shine itself is the goal, our epoxy flooring systems pair that finish with exactly this kind of engineered traction.

Is slip-resistant coating worth it for a business?

For a storefront, office entry, church, or shop floor, it is some of the cheapest risk management money can buy. Entryways collect rain and snowmelt, polished lobbies turn treacherous, and one fall costs more than a lifetime of coatings. We finish commercial surfaces from entries to warehouse aisles, among more than 2,000 projects over 40-plus years in the valley, and we will spec a texture that keeps customers upright without turning the floor into a scrub brush. Written scope and price first, always.

Clear answers to your concrete questions

How much does slip-resistant coating cost?

Usually only modestly more than the same coating without added traction, since the grit and texturing ride along with the system. Exact pricing goes in writing after we see the surface.

Can you add grip to my existing coated floor?

Often yes, with an additive-loaded topcoat over the properly prepared existing finish. If the old coating is failing, we tell you before putting anything over it.

Do textured floors get dirty faster?

Aggressive outdoor textures hold a little more grime and rinse clean. Interior fine-grit finishes mop nearly as easily as smooth floors. We match the texture to how the surface is cleaned.

What do you recommend for exterior concrete steps?

A repaired, resurfaced step with grit broadcast into the coating. It grips in rain and frost and outlasts stick-on treads by years.

Are your slip-resistant finishes okay for bare feet?

Yes. Pool decks and patios get textures selected to grip when wet while staying comfortable underfoot.

Does the grip wear off?

The traction lives in the wear layer, so it lasts as long as the coating. When the topcoat eventually ages, a recoat restores finish and grip in one visit.
